what was the difference between those two formats?

When I was young, I remember reading the showtimes and already knew that the movie was playing on a lot of screens (e.g., Loews Wayne).

that’s kinda weird since most movies nowadays can be played on two or three screens; was “Star Wars” the first movie to play on multiple screens because of its increasing popularity?

I agree with you, vic. Look at how a THX certified theater can have excellent projection while having decent sound. The only Clearview Cinema in my area to have digital is its most famous: The Ziegfeld Theater. They also have sharper projectors at their local theaters, which gives them a bit of an advantage over their larger competition.

moviebuff82 commented about Morris County Mall Twin on Feb 24, 2007 at 9:50 am

The former cinema, which was located minutes off Route 10 Eastbound on the way down to Morristown in Cedar Knolls (not too far from where I work at Employment Horizons, my workshop), later became a strip mall with a Wal-Mart as well as other stores and restaurants. When did it open and close and how many seats did it hold in each auditorium, as well as the sound and picture formats?

what’s in place of the drive in? At the intersection is a bunch of retail space that has taken up the space of the farm.

Just went to see Pan’s Labyrinth in theater #5, and the film was awesome. No splices at all (save for the change to credits at the very end which is normal for all movies), the sound was terrific, and the picture was very good, with readable big subtitles. All in all, a nice experience in a rarely crowded show. When I left the theater, there was a short line since it was early evening and most people were at the mall rather than the 16-plex. I hope business rebounds after the Oscars are over and seeing if some movies that have been out of the theater are going to play there. I really want to see “The Queen” but that’s playing only in Parsippany (Clearview) and in AMC’s sister theater in East Hanover (no stadium seating, duh). So much for AMC Select in Rockaway.

In the near future, newer theaters like the AMC Rockaway 16 will get enough profit from snack sales to buy digital projection for two of its biggest theaters, 8 and 9. I like the sound but the picture is very blurry except the cigarette burns and minor scratches which are very noticeable; I hope that theaters like this as well as those that will open in Linden and in Paramus will have technology that will bring more people to the movies, which are right now in a bit of a slump except that Ghost Rider is doing so well, even though no theaters aren’t showing it in DLP around New Jersey according to the local listings. Perhaps sitting in the back rows will increase my chance of seeing a sharper picture rather than sitting in the front rows…

I agree with you. It’s been a few months since I’ve been to a Clearview theater, and I still have a Clearview gift card!!! Too bad AMC doesn’t have the classics program that Clearview is having with the Succasunna theater after it was a hit at the Ziegfeld theater. Nor it does have that local neighborhood feel that Clearview is always known for, as well as its popular Baby Matinees and Kids Summer Fest program. When it comes to movies in the New York metro area, Clearview is #1.

Just went to see “Smokin' Aces” on President’s Day at this theater with my cousin and her husband (this is his first visit), and boy it was fun. My only complaint is that the bass level is too high and can cause popcorn or soda to fall on the ground. I hope AMC addresses this problem and improve the acoustics of this popular new theater so that I won’t hear rumbles or loud noises from another auditorium nearby. They should have THX check each auditorium (ala Clifton Commons) and that two of the biggest have DLP (the film prints are sometimes blurry and are not as sharp as those in CLearview’s Parisppany cinema).

and a hot spot for terrorism, as evidenced by the 9/11 attacks as well as crime and corruption, none of which has kept the Ziegfeld from closing. when that time comes, if it shuts down for good, it will leave celebrities another choice to see a movie premiere: the lincoln square multiplex.

moviebuff82 commented about Ziegfeld Theatre on Feb 13, 2007 at 2:13 pm

This sounds good for the theater as this movie might outlast all of the earlier crap at the theater, which is a good thing. Plus, it’s nice to see Dreamgirls the way it’s meant to be seen, on a DLP screen with excellent surround sound and comfortable seating, at one of the most famous theaters in the world.

How about the return of Star Wars (the good ones) at the theater? Oops, they did that already in the 1997 rerelease….they should bring some cult 70’s 80’s classics like an Alien double feature, a Ghostbusters double-bill, and a Rocky marathon.

moviebuff82 commented about Ziegfeld Theatre on Feb 13, 2007 at 12:34 pm

How about “Transformers: The Movie”? That sounds silly, but they should show it before the new “Transformers” movie comes out this summer (maybe at the Ziegfeld, perhaps?)

How about cult 80’s fantasy films like “The Dark Crystal”, “Krull”, and “Dragonslayer”, all presented in their original 70mm splendor and six-track Dolby Stereo!!! That would be cool.

The classic film series that played at the Ziegfeld is now in Succasunna, with one film playing every week. Has anyone been to this series, and how does it compare with the more popular Ziegfeld showings?

Which means that “Star Wars” played in plain old mono on one screen and another movie played on another with mono sound also. How many seats did each theater have after being twinned, and which one was larger, one or two?

moviebuff82 commented about Long Nights with Movie Trailers on Feb 9, 2007 at 10:52 am

AMC does a good job of showing previews in their original aspect ratio and the surround sound (e.g., Dolby Digital EX) because they are the only film reels attached to the policy trailers so that it runs after the AMC Moviewatcher Network ends; this (and other digital pre show materials by National Cinemedia) saves projectionists money and time, unlike Screenvision, which still uses old slides and film before the green band-less trailers.
