The Richmond Theater was in fact a one screen theater house, primarilly showing long runs of then current films though not a stranger to some rare b-film, cult and horror movies. I remember seeing EVIL DEAD at this theater when at the time, this was the only theater to show this film, and the only SI theater to shows films with the ‘NO ONE UNDER 17 ADMITTED.’ moniker. Korvettes was located in the same shopping center though closed in 1980. The Richmond Theater remained opened I believe through 1987 until it was tunred into a CRAZY EDDIE store. It was a fairly nice, clean theater for the most part.

I remember wining a contest for naming the theater. There must hve been about ten other winners. It was easy to win since all the other Century theaters were named after the area they were located in. The prize was a pass for one year and attending the grand opening which was “Casino Royale”. I Also remember as part of the grand opening they had a comedian entertain the audience before the film began.

This theatre was opened as Century’s Richmond Theatre, their only screen on Staten Island. The anchor department store in this center was E.J.Korvette’s, but I maybe wrong. Century’s policy at most of their first run theatres were the U.A. cartoons The Pink Panther, Ant and the Aardvark, Tijuana Toads and the Inspector which with a trailer preceeded the main feature. Does anyone remember the flying “C”’s logo for Century Theatres that came on before the trailer? The theatre closed in 1984/5 as it couldn’t be expanded or multiplexed because of its' small seating capacity. It was also a leased property.

I work for the Transit Authority which has a bus depot down the block from this theatre which is now occupied by Jembro it’s closest to Platinum and Marsh avenues.A passenger of mine told me that this used to be a cinema and I was going to submitt info on this but I didn’t have a name. Thanks for the info I knew it used to be a theater although it was gutted on the inside to make way for retail it still retains the classic cinema style on the outside like most modern cinemas of the 60-80’s.Prior to Jembro it housed the Gateway computer store which closed before Christmas of last year.
