Movies I saw at Elwood: Yellow Submarine, 2001: A Space Odyssey, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, The Brood, Dick Tracy, Parasite (in 3-D). In the late 1960’s the Elwood Shopping Center had a Meat Farm type store called Ehlner & Pike. Their logo had a 3-D cow’s head on the sign…or something like that. On the right hand end of the strip of stores was a small “ma & pa” drugstore. I bought my Aurora Phantom of the Opera model kit from there. Across the street was: Friendly Frost appliences.

Hello, is the Elwood theatres still under Town & Country theatres? and is Sid the owner (back in the 80’s) still doing well?

I’ll reiterate what I said—this is pretty much the only movie theater my wife and I frequent. The prices are beyond reasonable, the atmosphere is great and I cannot say enough about the wonderful and accomodating staff. Although my son is only 15 months, my wife and I are definitely planning on having one of his future birthdays here. In fact, when my 40th birthday rolls around in five years, I’m considering doing a movie party myself right at the Elwood. And I don’t see why you’re complaining about something the Elwood Theater had NOTHING TO DO WITH. Had they gone ahead and shown “A Night at the Museum” against the studio’s orders, they would’ve been putting their very business in jeopardy since the studio could’ve very well have banned the Elwood from doing business with them. And they did what any responsible business owner did—they knocked a few bucks off of your bill and gave you free passes. What gives? Support your local independent theaters, I say.

A.O.-
You guys do a great job over at the Elwood. Moviegoer should try a birthday party at the local multiplex, if she wants to see a REAL expensive debacle. Public apology? I’m glad that the December 19th comments are not going unchallenged, as they would at a large chain theater!

Moviegoer is not only a real pain in my ass, but a real douche bag as well.

Hello everyone, I’m new here. I would like to comment on the above statement. I say, with much pride, that I work at Elwood Cinemas in East Northport; I am not the manager however, just an observant staff member. When I say comment, I want it to be made explicitly clear that the following statement is the general consensus of the employees at the Elwood Cinemas. I do distinctly remember the above party in question, and I find it quite “UNBELIEVABLE” at what this man/woman is saying. Yes, we were unable to show the movie, Night at the Museum, that the family had booked the party for. This party was booked for a Wednesday, the opening day for the film; HOWEVER, the FILM COMPANY pushed back the opening until that Friday. I would very much like to know what this family wanted us to do for them, because showing Night at the Museum was an absolute impossibility at this point in the game, simply because WE DID NOT HAVE THE FILM YET. The above writer failed to mention that the theater gave his family a $50 discount on the party that is already quite inexpensive for what it is, AND a pass for their FAMILY, not just one person, the whole family, to return to our theater and see Night at the Museum when the film arrived. We had done ALL of this BEFORE the family “requested” a public apology. Honestly, we’re not politicians, requesting such a thing after we had done everything to make this party work, is absolutely ludicrous. To wrap this defense up, I would like to say that this happens once in a blue moon, and it was not our fault that the film company itself decided to push the release date back by TWO DAYS. Most families that book parties at our theater are extremely happy with our service and tend to be repeat customers. Not only do families have birthday parties, but some businesses like to have gatherings at our theater as well. Please do not let this extremely bias, one-sided sob story sway your decision to have your party with us. In regards to the comment, “this is a poorly run establishment”, I would like to respectfully disagree. Our managers are top notch, but will not do anything they feel is most unnecessary. People from all over town come to our small movie theater simply because: 1, we’re cheaper, 2, we’re friendly and accommodating, 3, we’re small and clean, 4, we’re safe, and lastly, 5, we don’t take any crap from any irate customers. If you don’t agree with me, that’s fine, go to the multiplex at Commack, I’m sure when you walk into that dump you’ll change your tune. Respectfully yours, Elwood Cinemas.

The squeaky wheel aways gets the grease, you got greased, but you are still squeaking. What you failed to tell everyone who read your statement is that we at elwood cinemas took $50.00 off of your party and gave you and your family free passes to come back and see the film we couldn’t provide at your party because the film company held the film back at the last minute……UNBELIEVABLE! I had no reason to apologize to your party for something that was out of my control, but at least I told you no to your face and didn’t turn around and write negative remarks about you. This is a fact. 99% of the people who have parties at our theater are very satisfied, but can’t please everyone.

Elwood Cinema is definitely NOT the place to book your kids next birthday party. They book you the party at which point you pay a deposit and get a confirmation receipt in writing of the movie you selected. Then no one has the courtesy to notify you of any problems until the night before the party only to tell you that the movie you want to see is not available & you need to select another movie (that you really don’t want to see). Now you have all of the invitations to 30 people with the name of the movie on the invites and everyone expects to see that movie. The theater calls you the night before as if nothing is wrong and then say that you need to see another movie as the movie you originally selected is not available….UNBELIEVABLE! The management at the movie theater wouldn’t even agree to publicly apologize to my party for their error. Again, this is a poorly run establishment and definitely NOT the place you want to book your kids next birthday party!

I was also at this theater for Wrath of Kahn, but I don’t think it was opening night as I don’t remember a long line. Went with a big group of friends, most of which I’m still connected with. Haven’t been around that area since moving out east in the late 80’s, glad to see it’s still around.

I HIGHLY recommend this movie theater. They play first-run movies and the admission is about $2 cheaper than the chain theaters. It is always clean and the staff (especially the owner) are wonderful. While the theaters aren’t the biggest, sound and picture quality are just as good if not better than any multiplex. It’s the movie theater my wife and I frequent, mainly because it makes me feel like I’m six years old again. I can’t wait until my own child is old enough so I can take him or her (I’ll find out in February) here, much like my mother used to when they’d play the Disney doublt-features.

Prior to moving back to Long Island (after living in Queens for four years), the last movie I saw here was “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” back in 1982. I remember the line stretched down to the other end of the strip mall.

Robert,
I do remember listings for the Larkfield theatre as well. I believe it was on Larkfield Road. I can’t confirm that since I never went there.

I find a 1972 listing for a theatre in East Northport called the Larkfield. Is it the Elwood or a totally different house?

The Elwood Cinema originally opened as a single screen. Then they split it in half. I believe now they have 4 screens.

The Elwood is located in the Elwod shopping center .This twin is one of the few indi theaters that still does well on longisland. The only local theater to last since commack multiplex opened so many years ago.For years this theater was owned by a dentist Sid Cinatar who aslo owned the hicksville and one or two other houses. They went under the name TOWN AND COUNTRY.This theater is only a twin…The shopping center is very small maybe 12 stores and the theater wich is now next to starbucks.
