“RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK” still running strong. It is on its 10 th week. Could it beat “STAR WARS” here on the same screen? I don’t think so.

June 12 1979 NOW SHOWING “PLAYERS” rated PG. and in Cinema 2 is “BATTLESTAR GALACTICA” rated PG. This was not in senssurround at the Weis Cinemas. Senssurround was only used at the IMPERIAL with"EARTHQUAKE" and “MIDWAY”. The MILLER played “ROLLERCOASTER” without that effect.

Godfather 2 opens first run at WEIS. never could understand PARAMOUNT booking fine movies in such small theatres/SCREENS.It had along run mainly because of the small amount of seats in each of the two theatres.

Looked again it is the BACON THEATRE,not Becon theatre.

I found that picture of the theatre mentioned above it was called THE BECON and not far from the GA. FLA. line on US 1.SHOULD have wrote the name of the town on it.

Yeah, I heard the same thing from my city manager,However, no one here ever really wanted one so i the pick of one sheets. I had heard from the old projectionist at THE SKYVIEW DRIVE in that the base of the screen had a stock room full of stills, one sheets etc.
I guess that was that way everywhere. I stopped by an old downtown theatre in a south Georgia town on my way to Jacksonville for GA. FLA GAME ON US 1 AND SPOTTED A THEATRE THAT HAD BEEN CLOSED I BET FOR years and you could look in and TISLOEWS there were one sheets still in the frames. You could look through a big picture window and see the theatre managers office with stacks of paper still on the desk. I came real close to finding a exit door. I have been lucky getting in old theatres {seeKNOX THEATRE] through the years.

Makes me want to cry.I have about 300 onesheets, could have had a lot more if I had thought to start keeping them earlier than I did.Even our old city Manager who worked for Loews about 30 years would say what does anyone want them for.

Yeah, it was a waste and a heart breaker to know they are part of the Augusta landfill. The Janitor knew Bill that is why i couldn’t understand why he did not save them.

That’s a criminal act! That janitor should have done jail time for pulling that stunt! Sounds like he only called Bill to antagonize him by saying he’s tossing ‘em in the dumpster. Couldn’t he have waited for Bill to get off work? At least it would have given Bill a chance to grab a whole bunch of them. Such a waste.

Here is a story that will make most of you CRY. The day after PEACH ORCHARD/WEIS closed the cleaning crew was there to do maintance,or what ever one does when a theatre goes dark. The lead guy,Janitor, for a better name, calls Bill Barkley at the REGENCY EXCHANGE and tells Bill they are Throwing away every “POSTER” as he called it in the Dumpster.
The janitor knew Barkley from MASTERS 4 and knew Bill would want the one sheets. Well, Bill was in booth so he calls me and no answer.
I am at HILTON HEAD on a vacation. SO EVERY one sheet was thrown in the thrash,Had i known that I certainly would have stayed home for such a treasure. The janitor talked to Bill that it must have been Thousands of one sheets since the cinemas opened in the early 70’s.

IT closed as the PEACH ORCHARD CINEMAS since it was in PEACH ORCHARD SHOPPING CENTER,there certainly wasn’t any peach orchards nearby.Just a dying part of South Augusta.

April 22 1977 KING KONG is on its last 14 days at the WEIS CINEMA CENTRE with CRASH in the other cinema.

While KING KONG is on its last 12 days WEIS opens with THE JOY OF LETTING GO. How a theatre could go from big paramount pictures to X rated fare i could not understand. Did that side of Augusta demand such trash. You never saw it on the West side of town. Of course, it is playing at the WEIS DRIVE IN and WEIS CINEMA CENTRE.

August 3 1975 NASHVILLE opens at the WEIS CINEMA CENTRE they are running a radio promotion with WGUS to give away a trip to Nashville via a GREYHOUND bus. Impressive.

Another outstanding Late Show at WEIS CINEMA ONE THE SECRET SEX LIVES OF ROMEO AND JULIET.No wonder NATIONAL HILLS is winning the late show battle.

WEIS CINEMA 1 While NATIONAL HILLS was running mainstream hollywood films for our late shows once again WEIS playing the X RATED COUNTRY DOC. Do they think all of South Augusta desires X RATED films? Nov.22 1974 another X RATED late show WHILE THE CATS AWAY.

August 9 1974 THE STING is playing at WEIS CINEMA 2.

WEIS CINEMA 1 is playing the x rated CHEERLEADERS Nov 22 1974

Nov. 15 1974 Keeping with the tradition WEIS CINEMA ONE is playing ANDY WARHOL’S DRACULA. X rated. The late show at the WEIS CINEMA ONE is pure slut 1001 DANISH DELIGHTS. I see why most AUGUSTA moviegoers choose NATIONAL HILLS THEATRE over WEIS for late shows.

Having worked in the theatres all my dating life i never had to buy a ticket or wait in line. That ended when my girlfriend Beverly wanted to catch CAMELOT at the Weis Cinemas. ABC and Georgia Theatres sorta had a deal worked out on pasess. Not this place. I tried to get her to see THE STORY OF O on the other screen .No way. We went to See THE SAILOR WHO FELL FROM GRACE WITH THE SEA and I thought Bev, was going to kill me. I had no idea it was that rough even with the R rating. But this outfit was nix on passes.Must be why we always looked down on them. THE SAILOR played at the IMPERIAL.

Several of us ushers had thought about going over to the Weis to work. After John Mackey left i Know Charles talked about it cause he had a good friend there. and as Charles told me they did play John Wayne’s last movie, And Doggone it , it was his last. They played a lot of Paramount Movies. But to me it was not the real theatre business SMALL SCREENS and the seating was not the best.

Christmas movies at the Weis are KING KONG,Billed as THE MOST ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE OF OUR TIME. What a joke! Just noticed they had showings that started at noon and the last show was at midnight. CAR WASH was in the other cinema. While the Weis Drive -IN was showing 3-D WIDE SCREEN ..HARD CANDY with the second feature SWINGING COEDS. CHRISTMAS 1976.

Is it possible you remember receiving “Star Wars” promotional material because Columbia Square actually opened in 1976 rather than in ‘77? See my post on the Columbia Square page…

Oh, and P-L-E-A-S-E stop typing in ALL CAPS!!!

Mike Rogers on October 2, 2009 at 4:46 pm

HEY, YOU ARE RIGHT! according to THE NEW YORK TIMES IT OPENED MAY 26 1977. COLUMBIA 1 AND 2 WERE STILL BEING BUILT.
HOWEVER, MICHAEL I CLEARLY REMEMBER GETTING A BOX OF BLUE AND WHITE STAR WARS FLYERS 3 ONE SHEETS; ONE WITH GREAT ART WORK THAT I STILL HAVE AND 2 WITH THE STAR WARS LOGO ON THEM. MAYBE IT WAS A RE-RELEASE. BUT THAT SEEMS LIKE A WASTE OF MONEY WHEN IT ALREAY HAD NAME VALUE TO THE FILM. GUESS I SHOULD HAVE LISTENED IN JOURNALISM 101 BEFORE WRITING ON THE FILM. THANKS FOR LETTING ME KNOW I HAVE A FEW OLD THEATER PALS THAT WILL BE GLAD TO KNOW THIS. HECK, I WAS IN THE BUSINESS SEVEN YEARS … THAT IS A LOT OF MOVIES.

How could “Star Wars” have been considered for booking at Columbia Square if that theater (at least according to the info you posted on its page) didn’t open until November 1977? (The Weis Cinema Centre booking began July 1, 1977.) Or, did the Columbia Square actually open in ‘76?
