The marquee looks great lit up at night. Nice to see this building cleaned up even its days showing movies are long gone. Now can someone do something about the decrepit Vogue?

It should be UN-triplexed. The small theaters are just too small. Might as well watch the film at home. Nice exterior but a venue to avoid.

THE best place to see a movie in LA.

Work has started again on this place. All of the front doors have been removed and there’s a big gaping whole into the building. The wreck of a lobby seems to have been painted all black at some point. The outer lobby is a mess. Not sure if this is the original nightclub project starting up again or a conversion to a restaurant or retail.

The Pacific should be retrofitted into a 3D cinema.

Although this space is currently listed as the State Theatre, it was simply named 69 Bathurst for many years. It had various incarnations as restaurants and nightclubs. However, where is the evidence this space was ever a cinema? Having been in the space several times, its a big room with exposed brick walls and large wood columns within the space. A typical warehouse space. Unlikely this was ever a cinema. The listing above is very vague and lacking a lot of info. What theater facade has been preserved? There was no ‘theater’ facade to preserve. Anyone with more info?

To Don S.’s Oct 24th question above concerning the Hollywood Playhouse: This facility now known as Avalon nightclub , was never a cinema. It opened in 1927 as a legitimate theatre and then had various incarnations as a live performance space and radio/television studio before being converted into a nightclub. Therefore, probably the reason its not listed on CT although it does appear on other sites like CinemaTour as Hollywood Playhouse.

The vertical sign that sat on top of the roof and long missing its neon, was removed last week.

Driving by yesterday, there is some restoration and repainting of the facade going on.

This is the current tenant of this former cinema. The green canopied entrance is the original main entrance. No trace of the cinema survives except for the actual brick structure.

Sad loss for the art house and independent filmmaking community but this was no Cinema Treasure. The auditoriums and screens were ridiculously small.

Any current news on plans for this theatre? Is it going to say -Pottery Barn – in big letters across the marquee after March 2010.

I much prefer what the marquee looked like in the 70’s than what it looks like now. The previous letters looked awesome.

This small multiplex theatre is possibly one the worst places to see a movie on the planet. It’s a great example of the late 80’s trend to build tiny little shoebox theatres. Some screening rooms (I won’t even call them a theatre) have less than 100 seats and actually have columns within the seating area. The decor is pure 80s kitsch. You’re better off watching a film at home on a big flat screen TV. I can’t believe this place is still around. For once, a cinema that wouldn’t be missed if a wrecking ball took it down tomorrow.

It is a beautiful old place but what to do with these old theatres on Broadway? The immigrant Latino population is moving on that once used these places for Spanish films and churches. The young white condo buyers that are moving in are too busy to see live shows and watch movies on their Ipods and flat screen TVs at home. I don’t see any commercially viable uses for these places other than for infrequent special events and as filming locations. The new Club Nokia and Nokia theatre at the LA Live complex nearby have a lock on any live performances for halls of this size.

Whoever this owner is, he needs to clean out his crack pipe. There’s already plenty of parking downtown and why is it an issue during the day? By 5pm, these lots are empty. Certain lots and parking structures do close at night but way past the time any shows would end. I don’t understand his request at all.

How many times is that For Sale article going to get reposted? When did CT become the Craigslist real estate page?

Have never been to the Crest. Must get over there before it shuts down and becomes another American Apparel outlet.

Love the Arclight. Perhaps, someday they will build another to add to their two existing locations. Maybe an Arclight Downtown LA? There’s certainly lots of space to put a new facility and demand will only increase in the area.

NicholasV: It says right in the article you refer to that the comdition is quite poor and there is very little of the original decor remaining. I’m sure the bad economy put a temporary stop to this development.
