Was this the original screen before CinemaScope®? What do they do when they run wide screen, just have a band aid type image. Time to add some plywood on the sides and expand.
Thanks for the photo Raul. I had no idea that the Tower was the Newsreel in 1953. Great marquee then now just a cheap plastic one. I wonder If they ever ran CinemaScope® or 3-D in 1953. A few newsreels were made in CinemaScope® and a few in 3-D 35mm.
Someone needs to take over the lease from the porn people and bring back movies or live shows. The United Artists Market Street Cinema is now closed and ready for the wreckers so they still run this place.
Any work what is going on for the Super Cinerama Century 21 Dome????? Watch out the sneaky bulldozers will come in the middle of the night like they did at the Dome in Pleasant Hill CA.
Let’s see if Quentin puts in a larger curved 70mm type projector and screen and the curtains working again now that he is shooting in Super PanaVision 70®. I hear It’s a very small theatre.
The Theatre Del Mar in Santa Cruz CA has their great Red waterfall curtains working again. They open on the trailers and close after the trailers and open on the main feature. Showmanship has returned to Santa Cruz. Thanks to Jim the manager. Stop in and see them work. You won’t see this in your local chain multiplex.
Good luck to the new owners in Monterey CA. Don’t forget to show some movies from time to time on the big screen and close the curtains. Don’t just run music events.
We hope Johnny’s puts in some large type true Drive-In’s not some cheap portable or go on the wall phony Drive-In’s. Find some land out of the city and the people will come to get out of the multiplex mess.
This former Portland Cinerama theatre still has the three cement Cinerama booths. The screen is large and semi curved. The only thing that will be missing when they get 70mm are the curtains. I believe they are still on the sides but do they work? Also please tell someone in charge to get rid of the bright white lights and change over to blue bulbs. Same on the upper sides put in some COLOR please.
Better go fast the wreckers are waiting. When they first opened they had a large semi curved screen with curtains, then for some reason when Pacific took over the lease they made the screen smaller. Century was to put in one of their large EX type screens but that won’t happen now. Keep the theatre and build on the parking lot.
Thanks Steve for the great ad. The way the Loews’s people ran the ad It made Cinerama® look 3-D and not that much of a curve. Must of looked good in 70mm Super Cinerama® on the curved screen they had. Gone are those days in NYC with the big 70mm curved roadshow screens. No It’s all X this X that with no masking.
Watch out these extra $$$ XD big screens are all different sizes and shapes some curved some not so much curved. All have NO MASKING! When you watch a scope digital video you get to see white screen at the top and bottom, and they charge you extra for this great look!
I think old Cinemark must have taken over someone else at this spot, they don’t put in nice places like this in their theatres. I guess the PHARAOH’s sell popcorn and drinks here. Thanks Kevin for the photo, do you have any photos of the XD screen house. I think It’s all show in the lobby and probably not a Egyptian art deco look on the inside???
Good news. Does anyone know If It flashes and are the little up and down lights on the rim sides working? What about the 4 stars do those light up also? Thanks
Thank GOD the people at city hall saved this great Cinerama Century 21 Dome Theatre in San Jose CA from the wreckers ball!!! Build all the new condo/shop junk around It and keep the Dome as a center piece. Bring on the classic movies and bring back the large curved screen with curtains and other entertainment events for a new generation to enjoy. Show them what showmanship is. It’s not at the local multiplex.
Thanks R8 for the nice Dallas area theatres. I have been trying to tell the people running THS these days that Dallas TX and surrounding areas will make a great place to visit for a future theatre conclave tour. Nothing happens, maybe someone will see these great photos and a light will hit them and wake them up before these movie palaces are gone someday.

This theatre was the home for Cinerama for many years in Kansas City. We hope they kept at least one large cinema before they did the chop?

The Regency 2 had a nice semi curved screen. Looked great on the times they ran 70mm. Thanks Steve for the classic ad.

Did this theatre feature UltraVision? Looks like the setup for this curved screen cinema.

I guess If It rains by the beach the people get soaked but the screen stays dry.
