Yes…..and it was one of the best screens also————-Most of the 2nd run houses had to get the wider screens since Hollywood was Producing Widescreen films at a rapid pace back then to compete with TV————My Father was working sewing the screens for many of the theaters in the area, and I went with him to the RKO Tilyou in Coney Island when they installed their Cinemascope screen and saw The Robe there on a test run———————-However as a youngster, my favorite “Itch” theater was the Rogers on Broadway under the El———Too bad nobody can find an old photo of that place, except for the facade that was above the Jamiaca EL at the Flushing St. station————Joe From Florida

Thanks, Joe From Florida. I never knew the Parthenon had 70 mm and Cinemascope.

I guess it was “Battle Cry” which I saw there in Cinemascope———-The Parthenon had a very big Cinemascope screen as I recall, and the theater had perfect lighting for the 70mm films———That probably was in 1955———-Joe From Florida

Hi Warren: I went to the Parthenon many times in the 1950s———The film that was playing at the Grand Opening was “Outside The Law”—1920 starring Lon Chaney Sr & Wheeler Oakman————-Oakman went on to appear in Warner Bros 1st all Talkie film in 1928, “Lights of New York”———-Joe From Florida

“Weingarten’s” Parthenon. I recall an upholstery or furniture store by that name in the area.

Glendale 27, NY

I lived in QUEENS. So did everyone else who lived in Glendale.

I think the confusion over the location of the Parthenon is due to postal zones. We lived several blocks further into Queens (on Putnam at Woodward Avenue) and had a Brooklyn zip code (11227) as the PO was actually in Brooklyn on Cypress Avenue. This led to confusion when out of town visitors couldn’t find us in the Brooklyn phone book. It often never occured to them that a city could have five phone books!

Does anyone know of any online photos of the interior of the Parthenon from when it was still showing movies?

Your Welcome PKoch: It’s nice to remember the old days, when going to the movies was a treat and an event as a youngster——-Too bad the kids of today have missed out on such things———-Joe From Florida

Thank you, metz and Joe From Florida, for your contributions !

I think there is a separate page for the Eagle Theatre on Central Avenue in Bushwick on this site. Also the Rivoli on Myrtle Avenue and Harman Street, next to the eastbound platform of the Knickerbocker Avenue station of the Myrtle Avenue el.

I remember the Parthenon as a clean one level theater that was spacious——and Bill, I even remember a film I saw there on 2nd run after it played the Madison——“Battle Cry” in 1954——-They had very bright screen——It was much bigger then the Wyckoff or the Starr for one level theaters———-The Rivoli on Myrtle Ave was a small two deck theater nearby——Little did I know in 1954 that I would be working at Hamburg Savings Bank one block away from the Parthenon in 1958 on Wyckoff & Gates Ave’s——-We moved to Long Island also in 1959———Joe From Florida

This isn’t a dumping ground for off-topic posts, Tonino. Let’s try to keep the conversation productive, everyone.

Very cool fella. I scored a copy of ‘The Hustler’ special edition. It’s presented in anamorphic widescreen. The transfer is in striking black and white cinematography by Eugene Shuftan. It has very nice blacks and generally excellent contrast. The print still looks pretty good. There are a couple of blemishes but this copy looks really stunning. The level of detail and sharpness is impressive for a film of this age. Even in black and white it’s a much better movie then ‘Color of Money’. A must have for any dvd collector and Paul Newman fan.

I was about to issue three silver stars to some of you for displaying much self control in abstaining from posting any off-topic posts on the Ridgewood page. It was such a pleasure to see you playing nicely for 23 days.

But then a few of you just couldn’t help yourselves and broke the fast. ok, lets try again, but please feel free to post all your way off-topic stuff here on the Parthenon page. As well as any rants against me.

Shalom, ciao, and excelsior

Permission granted to use the Parthenon page to exchange way-off topic stuff, such as availabity of $2 bargain priced DVDs or reviews of Grade Z Sci films.

Glad to see that you kids are plying nice and that there recently, with only one exceprion. keep up the good work on the Ridgewood and Madison pages.

Knock yourself out on the Parthenon page,

I have no objection to reasonable discussions regarding recollections of the old neighborhood or chums.

In current medical ads, “60 is the new 30.” Conversely, for posting purposes only, is the Parthenon the new Ridgewood (or RKO Madison)?

I enjoyed the pictures and the ‘28 description of the Madison which Warren recently posted there.

Note the following typos posted by me on Dec 29, 2006 at 6:54pm:
1st line, change “Dolero’s” to “Solero’s"
16th line, change "cross-corelation” to “cross-correlation”

And that has exactly what to do with Lost Memory? ‘Tonino, you and I have remained quite civil to each other up to now (I assume that the “D” in my last name above was a typo?) and I have no interest in engaging in our own scuffle here – but you can’t claim innocence in rehashing the ill will that turned this site into a battleground so many months ago when you needless lash out at someone who has absolutely nothing to do with the exchange of words between Warren and mikemovies. An exchange that took place back in September, no less. Cuesto non e justo, 'Tonino! Not to mention that there was no “gang”, for if there was, then I guess I would have been a part of it. A gang implies some sort of organization – and I can tell you there was NONE of that! There may have been a group of folks with a like minded view of the situation, but it was not a concerted effort. Lost Memory has no more control over mikemovies’ comments and posts here than you do. Please. Let’s put away the cross-correlation programs and other apparati di spionaggio and leave this all behind us. It’s old already. And this is the time of year to ring in the new and ring out the old.

Be of good cheer, folks. Let us peacefully return this page to discussions of the Parthenon Theater and move on. Buon Anno a tutti!
