There again today, still no escalators or elevators fixed. A woman over 60 with a walker struggled for about 10 minutes to get down to the lower level of the theater, holding on to the handrails. Nice to see also that a few bathroom stalls are not in service either.

On the upcoming schedule for February 24 I noticed that the earliest showings were rather late considering New York public schools are closed that day. For instance the lone opener “Wanderlust” has its first showing is 3 pm. They said whilst I was there attending Ghost Rider that some doctor rented the whole theater and almost 800 guests were coming. He apparently does this once a year. Do they have conferances or do they actually watch some movie like when the schools come for special showings of those Disney Earth day films?

What’s happening here? Both the escalor to theaters 5, 6 & 7 has been out for a few weeks and so has the elevator. I have bad knees and find it a struggle walking up. And if you have to use the bathroom during the film it’s a horror scene for your knees with nothing working. In addition Friday they couldn’t seem to get any picture going. The sound was bad on “This Means War” and when the film shut down for a few seconds after first being loud then like a whisper one of the ushers announced all here would get free passes to another film, which we did. Question is when will the repairs get done.

I passed by here today and on one side of the marque it says Bushwick Twin! What’s up with that. Seeing a door open through the screen in front of the theater one sees the film titles “Vantage Point” and “Meet the Spartans” above I guess a couple of entrances. I guess what was playing at the end. I never saw a film at this theater.

Went by the theater today and they say they are staying open and they gave me a different phone number for the theater which they do answer. Noticed that too,the people selling tickets and concessions holding up the lines pitching the Stubs cards.

Now the marquee is just showing a Loews sign (they are AMC now) and it’s blank on the other side. They told me last week that the only guy who was brave enough to go up on the sign had been on vacation but now it’s covered up, if not covered blank.

They added 3 movies this week, Mission Impossible. Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and War Horse but have not changed the marquee or I should say sign at the front of the shopping center since any of them open. Driving by you would think no new pictures are playing, none of the new ones listed.

Went there Friday to say Harold and Kumar and they are still only charging $3 extra for 3D as opposed to AMC’s Bay Terrace which is now charging $4, why is this???

Another low for this theater; they bring back 2 old pictures they got rid off, Real Steel for a 4th week (5 weeks out)after getting rid of after 3 and Moneyball for a 5th (7th overall) after playing the first 4 weeks here. No new pictures here, maybe we’ll be a second run house. Does anyone else who writes here ever visit this theater.

The Bombay theater nearby is also playing “Ra One”.

Went to see “Puss in Boots” here today and they jumped the price of 3D pictures to $4 extra. Why is this when it is becoming obvious that more people are choosing the 2D version. You can even tell by the theater’s showings with at least the last 3d films there, “Dolphin Tale”, “Three Musketeers” and this one having alternate 2D and 3D showings. AMC’s Fresh Meadows which had 3D first charged initially $4 additional then dropped it back to $3. Wasn’t this after some people in the city were being charged $20 total at some AMC theaters to see the 4th Shrek film?

They are currently playing an Indian film here “Ra. One” or “Random Access One”. I wonder how the nearby Phoenix / Bombay theater feels about this.

First film I saw here was “All of Me” in 1984 and last was “Mr. Magoo” in 1997. Also remember seeing here such epics as Titanic, Amistad, Dances with Wolves and the Postman, the last 2 starring Kevin Costner. Moved out of the Bronx in 98.

MarkP, the girl told me the bulb would cost about $1800 but that didn’t count the mirrors or other parts of the equipment. Yesterday they said the picture was indeed running but they could be running it on a smaller screen, maybe cancelling a lesser performing picture. If they were doing that my guess would be “What’s Your Number” which opened weak last week. Since they are selling advance tickets to “Footloose” for next week I presume this flic is gone. I remember a few Christmas seasons back every time one wanted to buy a ticket for the Adam Sandler film “Spanglish” performances were always cancelled, different days too. I finally saw it on the 3rd or 4th attempt there.

Went there today to see Real Steel and noticed they had cancelled performances of Ides of March which also opened today. They said the light in the projection system exploded and the mirrors which help the picture to be shown also broke. This appears to be in theater 6, one of their 2 big screens. How long does this take to fix and surpriasing it has happened since they are all digital which probably has nothing to do with projection.

Don’t know if this is the place for this comment but I got a DVD of “This is Cinerama” last week and watched it, 3 screen lines and all (got from ioffer.com). Must have been fascinating at the time but I could see audiences today being bored at things like the opera and the choral show from Long Island and the Robert Fitzpatrick style travelogue bits on it. But it’s worth it for the roller coaster ride, parades in Glascow and dance numbers in Spain and that low flying plane sequence at the end flying everywhere from New York City to Niagara Falls, Pittsburgh, Boulder Dam and I think through either Grand Teton or Mt. Zion park. Even Lowell Thomas' intros were interesting with the pre Great Train Robbery bits.

Has anybody noticed how bad the projection system is getting here. When they show the early ads for products or that filler first look stuff shown before the ads the screen verges on badly faded color. It looks like public domain films of the 1950’s that no one cared for or like Kodacolor film over time. Sometimes it’s almost black and white and some other customers are complaining to one another.

Just went here for the first time in my 13 years living in Queens, saw Bucky Larson, Born to be a Star. Big crowd, 2 people myself included. Theater was quite nice, spiral staircases to the upper theaters, concession stands and bathrooms on both floors. Could never tell theater was 69 years old. But the admission prices compare to the Atlas Mall theather in Glendale. Matinee was $9.50! Nighttime showings are $13.50 with $17.50 tops for 3D!

DARCYDT commented about Movie ticket price hits all-time high on Aug 7, 2011 at 9:09 pm

$13 at night for a movie at the Regal Atlas Mall theater in Queens, New York. $17 for a 3D presentation. This in a deserted mall where almost every store has closed and their anchor Borders will be gone in a month. This is a neighborhood theater, not a Manhattan one.

DARCYDT commented about Regal Atlas Park Stadium 8 on Aug 2, 2011 at 9:54 pm

I just passed this theater at the mall yesterday and could not believe that in Queens there is a cinema charging $13 admission, $17 for 3D. I think the $13 general admission (non 3D) is the most I’ve seen in all of New York, higher than even Manhattan. In Boston recently I saw $12.50 at the AMC Boston Commons cinema.

I remember seeing this movie as a sneak preview in Manhattan either at the Loews State or the RKO National, don’t remember which one. What was weird to me about the preview was that it was shown with a film that opened the same day in that theater. The regular film was “Sea Wolves” starring Gregory Peck, Roger Moore and David Niven. So you got 2 for the price of one, many people just sitting through “Sea Wolves” to see the first Spielberg/Lucas collaboration. I had never seen and I believe I have not seen since a sneak preview with an opening day film on the same screen. This is back when sneak previews in New York were shown on Fridays. Now the rare preview appears to be only on Saturdays.

I lived outside of Parkchester in 1990 and remember the American in Parkchester was showing Blue Steel with Jamie Lee Curtis. Instead I travelled up to the Riverdale twin for thew only time to see the same picture because you also got to see a sneak preview of Pretty Woman. This was back in 1990.
