I see there are accent colored lights on the former Carolina Theatre uptown corner now. Hope to see work started on the theatre and rebuilding of the lobby in 2015!!
“The Carolina Theatre’s facade, dismantled by the city in the late 1980s and stacked under the stage, will be placed on the front of the new lobby, facing Tryon.” I would like to see the new lobby based on the original design though it doesn’t exactly say that in the article. I would think that it would be based on the original so it would be in keeping with the original design in the auditorium. I have entered that space a few times and each time I am struck by how beautiful it must have been in its heyday. Congrats to the City of Charlotte and the Belk Foundation for realizing the importance of saving this historic theatre in uptown Charlotte.
It’s a shame that the late Whitney Houston who grew up in the Newark area and eventually was laid to rest there didn’t help save this theatre during her lifetime and illustrious career.
I plan on calling the theatre and arrange a tour on behalf of Cinema Treasures this month!

So many theatres in downtown WPB and the theatre in Palm Beach..all gone now..such a shame!
I visited this town a few summers ago and was disappointed to learn that the Lake is no longer in this quaint lake village.
Wish the Town of Palm Beach had preserved this historical theatre!

I was in Concord NC last night and will check out the address at 9 Union upon my return to see what is there now.
After reading about this historical theatre it is a shame that the interior was gutted….Evanston’s loss!
Just saw on FB an interior photo of this theatre under After the Final Curtain. Will this theatre be restored as it has an awesome exterior.

Scott: I think this is addressed in the Charlotte Observer article. I do recall reading that the numbered facade pieces would be replaced.

Was it the Liberty at 801 5th Avenue? Research tells me it may have been.
In the street view photo there looks to be another former theatre on 5th across the street and down. Anyone know?
