We get it after the first post you don’t like this thing but please just relax. It’s not the end or even the beginning of the end of movie theaters. Do you honestly think someone is going to see this and think “Wow! A movie theater in a shoe box that actually shows real movies! Oh yeah, that’s how I’ll watch my movies from now on! Shoebox Cinemas, yea!!!” I don’t think so. It’s just an imaginative and fun idea that someone had and nothing more. It’s not one of the signs of the movie theater apocalypse so don’t worry.

As for the purpose? It’s a toy. That’s it’s purpose. Kind of like the Easy Bake Oven. As far as I recall, that didn’t replace real ovens so I’m confident this won’t replace real movie theaters.

I saw “Empire” on the BIG screen at Northpark 1 & 2 in Dallas. 1200 seat auditorium with a huge screen, great picture and sound. My sister was assistant manager so she snuck me in through the exit door and I helped sweep the auditorium to get it ready for the next movie and then sat down. I never had to wait in line and I had my choice of seats.

I read the article at the above link. Seems like a case of Carmike not wanting to put any money into the building in its final few years. They allowed the auditoriums to go into a state of semi-disrepair i.e. broken seats not being fixed, sticky floors; yet the patrons put up with it. Now, according to the article, after being closed for a year, the building is in an even more state of disrepair and it may not make sound fiscal sense to fix it up. But the city wants it open in the worst way so who knows.

While RunPee may or may not not encourage or entice viewers to pop open their Blackberries and IPhones to chat/text/tweet/etc, its still encourages them to open the darn things which will cause distractions caused by the beacon of light they shine and will interrupt the enjoyment of the movie for everyone else. Wanna take a break from part of the movie? Here’s the solution… rent the movie when it comes out on DVD and watch it at home. There you can take all the breaks you need and use your cell phone all you want without disturbing anyone else.

But for now, ENOUGH OF THE CELL PHONE USAGE DURING MOVIES!!!!

bob1007 commented about Favoring the ticket kiosk on Jul 3, 2009 at 1:43 pm

I prefer using the kiosk when I go to my local AMC due to the convenience and I use the box office at my local independent that doesn’t have a kiosk. I have never had to pay a “convenience” charge of any kind for a movie ticket and I don’t think I ever want to; that is just a way to nickle-and-dime the patrons. Personally, I think there is a need for both. Not everyone uses cards/debit such as children or folks who prefer to pay cash.

Regal has $1 popcorn day. But, AMC has FREE popcorn Wednesdays if you have an AMC Movie Watchers card.
