No theater was better positioned to capitalize on sound film than the Joy Theatre’s original namesake, The Circle Theatre. The only theater in the area with Vitaphone, Don Juan was a box office sensation for the theater and veteran circuit Saenger was booking the Circle. But a new owner took a markedly different attitude toward the notion of sound pictures and had the equipment removed. The rest, as they say, is history as every major theater on theater row converted to sound pictures except one: The Circle.
