This is not the Roxy North Ward Drive-In. It is one of the two dozen or so U.S. Drive-Ins that had been built in the seven years since the first one opened in 1933. The photo appeared in the Townsville Daily Bulletin on the day the North Ward Drive-In was launched (15th November 1940). Roxy manager Joseph Pollard was apparently inspired by the idea of this recent American innovation, but the Townsville Sports Ground venue layout would have looked quite different. (Australia’s first ‘conventional’ Drive-In – the Skyline Burwood - opened in Melbourne, Victoria 17th February 1954).
