Windsor Theatre

November 2022 photo by Martin Jaul. The Canterbury Windsor operated as a typical independent suburban theater until the coming of television led to its first closure on 27th October 1960. Several attempts were later made to re-launch the venue, including the screening of Arabic films. In 1974 some renovations took place and the theater re-opened with English language films as Cinema 96. Reason for adopting this peculiar appellation are a mystery. One can only guess that the operators hoped to obtain some benefit from an association with the scandalously popular TV soap opera of the time called “Number 96”.
