In February 1936 showman Roy Purves (1887-1980) announced that he was to build a 1,500 seat £15,000 cinema in Goulburn. He was planning an independent circuit of suburban and country cinemas to consist of existing sites and newly built venues to be designed by Aaron Bolot (1900-1989). Under this plan the almost identical Goulburn and Randwick Ritzes were built, while another - intended for Sydney suburban Burwood - was not.
