  • <p>Menora Theatre 362 Walcott Street, Menora, WA - All that remains of the unique multi coloured chess board ceiling today.</p> <p>Photo - Courtesy of the Machlin family</p> <p>Description - The ceiling (pictured) is the original ceiling from the Menora indoor cinema, and I believe it still exists as such today. (Note: Originally the lighting was indirect, however in the subsequent years after closing, fluorescent lighting has been added for various purposes) The plaster mould ceiling is fashioned in the shape of a chess board, displaying squares of various colours. Celebrated theatrical architect Samuel B.   • <p>Menora Theatre and Picture Gardens 362 Walcott Street, Menora, WA</p> <p>Photo - Creator: Chris Kershaw Photographer - Copyright: City of Stirling</p> <p>The area now known as Menora was once considered part of Mount Lawley. It was included in the land originally granted to Charles Bourne in 1840, but subdivision did not commence until the 1940s.</p> <h1>Menora. The current name was chosen in 1954 and was influenced by the location of the Menora Picture Theatre in Walcott Street.</h1> <p>Residential development</p> <p>Menora was designed on the principles of the garden suburb, and thus incorporated green streets, parks within walking distance of all residents and a curvilinear street system. As Menora was developed over a relatively extended period, it has a varied residential character. The suburb contains a large number of character homes, with many buildings having significant heritage and cultural value. Architectural styles range from Californian bungalow to art-deco, post-war and</p> <p>international-style.</p> <p>The dwellings are predominantly single detached residences on large lots and are generally of brick construction. Adair Parade contains the only significant agglomeration of unit developments. Many homes in Menora have recently been restored, allowing Menora to retain its unique character. Community development</p> <p>Menora contains some commercial ribbon development along Walcott Street, which allows local residents to access retail services. The suburb features a large number of public open space reserves and several pocket parks. These are used primarily for passive recreation, with the exception of a tennis centre in Alexander Park.</p> <p>Saint Paul’s Primary School is located to the south east of Menora and the area also contains several homes for senior citizens.   • <h1>Menora Theatre and Picture Gardens 362 Walcott Street, Menora, WA - Sale of projection equipment 1961</h1> <p>Photo - Courtesy of Roy Mudge</p> <p>In 1961 the family was forced to close both the Menora Theatre and the Picture Gardens because of the advent of television. The projection equipment from the cinema made up of Centrex projectors and Westrex Sound was sold to Arthur Stiles of City Theatres for £2,000, who immediately installed them into their prestigious Piccadilly Theatre in Hay Street. Some years later the equipment found its way into the Grand Theatre in Murray Street.
