I remember watching the rock n roll movie WOODSTOCK in 1970 and every seat was taken. The site now contains a 42 story Ritz Carlton hotel on this and adjacent sites.

The Century Mall Theatre, and the Mall, did not fare well because of the poor layout of the mall. The entire Mall probably had a good 15 year run until larger grandiose malls started appearing in Westchester County.

Actually, the first floor is retail/office space and the upper floors is leased to a private School known has Hallen which has been at this location going on 20 years.

This theatre is still standing but redevelopment in this part of New Rochelle is sluggish. It is located across the street from the former Brandt’s Town Theatre that is currently being use as a furniture store in the lobby. The theatre is twinned but could be a nice cultural art’s centre.

Let’s hope that the new operator Bow Tie Cinemas does not close this theatre and propose to knock it down and build condos like they did in the adjacent community where they closed the Mamaroneck Playhouse last week. This theatre is a gem even though it has been turned into a triplex yrars ago.

The Rogowsky family that has owned this theatre for decades recently sold the property in the past couple of years. There are no plans for what this theatre will be utilized for or be demolished. It would be a nice complement to the nearby Capitol Theatre and is in the middle of restaurant row that includes a restaurant co-owned by Mario Batali.

The Capitol is doing great as a music venue and is properly managed. They even have a bar named “Garcia’s” that was approved by the family of Jerry Garcia. I wish that they would show some classic revival movies on nights when concerts were not scheduled.

Fatima-r: The theatre has always been a big, plain rectangular ceiling with no character. I believe that it originally contained a stage but was removed. Rumor has it that Harrison will FINALLY undergo a redevelopment after many years of discussion and the theatre will probably be torn down.

DomZ commented about Condos proposed for Mamaroneck movie theater on Apr 24, 2014 at 6:15 pm

I remember seeing the Beatles “A Hard Days Night” in 1964 when this was a grandeur single screen movie house. It was a second run house until the late 1970’s when United Artists made it a quad theatre. When the theatre opened in the 1920’s, Burns and Allan would do vaudeville acts here under another name because they were under contract in vaudeville houses in New York City. There has been some talk in Mamaroneck regarding trying to get landmark status and to preserve the Playhouse but I do not think it is going to happen. As of yesterday, 30 units of upscale housing is being considered for this site since the downtown is a destination place for eateries and there is some new commercial development happening as we speak. Sorry to see the theatre go
