1970s color redo

View of part of the California’s auditorium, taken during the 1991 Theatre Historical Society Conclave. This shows the very lively color scheme applied over the original 1927 finishes in the late 1970s when artist Guillermo Trejos and his crew began a cosmetic refurbishment of the interior when the theater was owned by Jose Borges. The patterns in the inset panels were kept to their original design, but the faux marble panels and green walls and variances in tints and shades elsewhere were Trejos' inspiration. In the post-2000 restoration, these finishes were covered over for the most part, their only visible legacy being gold leaf on the goddess headed capitals atop the pilasters flanking the organ grilles. In the 1920s, these features had been simply finished to look like limestone.
