Corral Drive-In

The Corral Drive-In was opened by 1952 when it was operated by Frontier Theatres Inc. It was destroyed by fire on July 3, 1956. It was rebuilt and was still open in 1957.

Another drive in has been reborn! Charles and Nina Harris of San Saba were featured today (1/29/2005) on Bob Phillips’s T V show “Texas Country Reporter”. Charles and his wife discovered and literally uncovered the long-forgotten Corral’s small projection booth and concession stand in an overgrown cow pasture. With a lot of hard work and help and donations from friends and volunteers, the Corral Drive-In is open and showing movies. Sadly, it did not last long and closed later in 2005.

Austin American-Statesman, July 3, 1956: “SAN SABA, July 3 (CTS) - Fire completely destroyed the Corral Drive-In Theater, a mile south of San Saba, about 2:45 p.m. Monday (2). The fire was thought to have started from the sparks of a nearby trash or grass fire. A spokesman for the theater said that it would be rebuilt and would be ready for use in seven or eight weeks.”

A closer address is 969 TX-16, San Saba, TX.

This puts it right on the property. A 2008 Google Street View showed the screen mostly intact, but by the following year it had mostly disappeared.

The projection booth/concession stand is also intact and you can still see the outline and the ramps.
