The Essex Theatre was opened by Wometco Theatres on April 5, 1949 with Humphrey Bogart in “Knock on Any Door”. It was renamed Atlantic Theatre from September 15, 1978 to 1980. It was twinned on December 4, 1981 and reverted back to its Essex Theatre name. In 1983 it was tripled. It became a bargain cinema, running older movies for a buck. The Essex Theatre theatre closed in 1985. It now houses a church.
