Texan Theatre

Located on Bolivar Street between 4th Street and 5th Street. Dating back to the silent picture/vaudeville era Sanger’s Texan Theatre was typical of small town cinemas, with a commercial style facade composed of buff brick and rough stone. A stud light marquee sheltered a polychrome boxoffice that was flanked by two sets of French paned doors.

Inside the wide lobby the concession stand and boxoffice were conjoined for convenience. Spanish tile brightened floor areas. Lobby walls were enhanced in shades of sandy tan, lined with coming attractions poster cases framed in chocolate brown. Embossed tin squares covered a high ceiling, from which were suspended three milk glass chandeliers.

Auditorium walls were painted bronze tan hues, trimmed in powder blue, with crystal candelabra wall fixtures. Two aisles divided three sets of seating areas that held comfortable theatre chairs upholstered in plush fabric. Elegant royal blue stage drapes were double pleated, trimmed in long gold fringe.

Sanger Public Library Archives contains several exterior and interior vintage photographs of the Texan Theatre.

Today a Radio Shack now occupies the space once occupied by the Texan Theatre. During conversion to retail use the auditorium sloped floor was made level and the stagehouse removed.
