This theater is great; one of the last of its kind. Originally a bowling alley and opened by Cinema World, it still has an old school, family feel missing from the multiplexes of today, plus it has really big auditoriums. The managers there have been around for a while and give the place a real down-to-earth, personal touch that’s really missing in today’s society. All in all, my top place to see a movie in Pittsburgh.

When was this theater opened? When did it change from Cinema World to Carmike?

The theater opened in 1986. In 1994, Carmike bought all of the Cinema Worlds around Pittsburgh. Phil Koutsoulou has been the General Manager since the theater opened.

I am still in love with this theater! It has never changed a bit since it opened…and I’m a big nostalgia addict! I took my kid’s there at Christmas time, and the place was decorated beautifully! Definitely something you will NEVER see at one of the big box multi-plexes! I was wondering though, does anyone have photos or information of the bowling alley that was there prior? I do not remember it, at all!

I remember the bowling alley. I don’t have pictures.. but my memories (and this closed when I was 5 or 6!) was purple painted walls with orange carpet on them from the floor to about your waist… the classic lights on the ceilings. I thought it was called Roller King.. but it may have been one of those places that my mother called by another name.
Cinema World was where the parking lot of Toys R us is now (Children’s Palace was also in the same area, now KidZone and Mattress Discounters). I remember seeing Song of the South there! I had to be REALLY small. I also remember my brother and my cousin sneaking in to stand at the back of one of the Friday the 13th movies and covering my eyes with me crying. Jeeze!

Grand opening of the Southland 9 was May 23, 1986. Thus, it lasted just over 30 years.

I explored the theater while it was being demolished. Here is the video of it.
