Tar Theater/Majestic Theatre, Tarboro NC

The Tar Theater and the Colonial Theater in Tarboro were part of the Howell Circuit in the early-1960’s.

The Tar Theater was opened in 1935 as the Majestic Theater. After closing in the early-1970’s, the Tar Theater became a clothing store and a pawn shop among other uses over the years. In 2009, the building still stands and is ‘For Lease’.

This theater is located at 214-216 North Main Street in downtown Tarboro. A plaque on the building indicates that the theater was built in 1935 and originally named the Majestic Theatre. The Salvation Army Thrift Store once occupied this building in the 1990s. Back in 2009, there was an attempt to open an adult bookstore in this former theater, but it was quickly blocked.

Wonder if this theater had any association with the Boykin operated theaters in Wilson, NC or Earnhardt Enterprises of Edenton.

While I was working at the Taylor Mr. Earnhardt offered me a management job at a Tarboro theater but my salary bid of $100 per week killed the offer—I did not feel disappointed since I was going to school for a different goal.

This building has a plaque on it that reads:
