Pacific Theatres converted a former men’s store into the Lakewood Center 1,2,3 and opened it on June 12, 1981 with “Raiders of the Lost Ark” showing on two screens. The Press-Telegram noted that tons of concrete was poured to slope the floors. This added to the number of screens in Lakewood Center as the original Lakewood Center Theatre, which was built nearby in the same mall’s parking lot in 1968, had increased to four screens in 1974.

On December 11, 1992, 1,500 seats and six more screens opened in a former Buffum’s department store that had been gutted, bringing the total to nine screens. The total number of screens in Lakewood Center, which has appeared on the list of the top grossing theatres in the country, is now 25.

Closed on June 26, 2008.

Frankly, I’m surprised this place lasted as long as it did, after the opening of the 16 screens up the parking lot.

I TAP’d this theatre a couple times during the late 1990s, and while there was never anything ever wrong with the place on a technical level during my visits, I hated going there because it just had zero charm.

I went to a few movies here in the early nineties. I agree, not much of a moviegoing experience. It won’t be missed.

I don’t have any childhood memories of this theatre. I only went as an adult and I’d have to say it was not a very good theatre. I only went there if I had to, which thankfully was only a few times. I mainly remember the seats being very uncomfortable.
The building was converted to a 24 Hour Fitness.
