News About This Theater

Regal Independence Plaza

When the Independence Mall was closed and extensively remodeled in the mid-1990’s, and the original Eric Twin closed and was torn down, the Destinta Theater was opened in May 1999, this time being incorporated into the design of the open-air mall, unlike the stand-alone Eric Twin.

When it originally opened, they offered a card which would be punched for each ticket purchased; after the twelfth ticket, the holder would receive a ticket for a free movie. This was eventually phased out.

The decor is at least in the auditoriums, very modern, with bright blues and purples and blacks predominant and exhibited via modern shapes hanging on the walls. Sound was very good as of 2003 - in fact, it often had the best audio of many theatres in the Trenton/Philadelphia area.

It was closed on December 21, 2012. It was taken over by Regal in November 2015 and was renovared. It had a ‘soft’ reopening on February 11, 2017.

According to yesterday’s Times of Trenton the theater is up and running on a “soft opening” basis as the operators work the bugs out. No online version of the story is available.

Since 2011, this theater has been known as the Destiny 12 after it was sold by Destinta in 2011. It was declared by Hamilton Township officials to be unsafe for human occupancy and closed at least temporarily on Dec. 21, 2012. View article. It had apparently been running as a discount operation.

This also opened in May, 1999. Must had lost the war with the AMC Hamilton 24.

Regal will be reopening with recliners at some point in 2016. I’m sure they’ll succeed in ways Destina and Cinema Holdings Group couldn’t (I’m sure the later left the place trashed – they are the worst of the worst).

The theater’s sign on Broad Street is now covered with a wrap announcing Regal’s ownership and the recliners. Doesn’t say when they’ll open but I suspect it won’t be too long.

The word on the street is that they are looking at a December 2016 opening. The format of seating will be similar to the new luxury seats opened at other Regal Theaters.
