Located just to the east of the Utica city line. The Schuyler Drive-In was opened on May 23, 1951 with Robert Cummings in “The Pretty Girl” & Irene Dunne in “Never a Dull Moment”. It had a capacity for 600-cars. A second screen was added in 1967 and capacity was increased to 1,200-cars. It was closed in 1984.

CinemaNational was the last operator of this drive-in. One screen showed adult features and one did not. The drive-in was boarded up in the early-to-mid-80’s and left to rot. I believe the name of the theater was spelled “SKYLER TWIN DRIVE-IN”, as that’s what the roadside pylon said. The property was visible from the NYS Thruway. Someone spray painted “PINK FLOYD” on the attraction board after the theater closed.

This drive-in, since demolished and replaced with an office building, was on Drive-In Road in Schuyler. I was driving around upstate New York taking photos of old cinemas one day when I sped past a sign that said “Drive-In Rd.” I slammed on the brakes, backed up, and drove onto the street, immediately recognizing the remains of an old drive-in theatre. I pretty sure that what was left is now gone as well, but you can see my photos of the 2003 remains at http://www.cinematour.com/tour.php?db=us&id=23812 .

Actually, I guess they haven’t built the office buildings yet. The land is “shovel-ready” but still vacant as you can see in the satellite image at http://www.herkimercountyida.com/businessparks/ .

The sign out front was posted as “Skyler Drive-In” located in Schuyler, New York, approx. 3 miles east of Utica. I went here as a teenager in the 1970’s to see the adult features. It was a twin screen theater…screen 1 usually showed first-run feature films and screen 2 showed the adult films. This drive-in was pretty popular in its day. I did some research some years ago at the Utica library. The last listing for any movie showing was Sept. 1985. The site was abandoned and fell into disrepair. Then in the early 2000’s it was renamed the Schuyler Business Park. The old screens, already 90% gone, were torn down along with the sign. Two firms occupy th park now…Wilcor Distribution Center and a firm that manufactures wood pellets for stoves. I have nothing but the fondest memories of this place. My last date there was July 2, 1983.

Sad site now. As i believe its all but gone even the old screens. I remember the last movie i saw there was the double feature. Rambo and Breakfast club. Its a wood pellet factory now. Breaks my heart how we have lost all our local drive inn theaters.

Opened on 23/5/1951 with “The Petty girl” and “Never a dull moment” opened with 1 screen and 600 cars. 2nd screen opened in 1967 with 1200 cars. Third planned in 1966, but never built. Closed in 1984.
