Cozy Theatre

On April 13, 1917, the Ogden Examiner said ‘With the purchase of the Oracle Theatre on Washington Avenue, between 24th Street and 25th Street, Stanley B. Steck has now three Ogden picture houses under his control, the Oracle, Lyceum and Rex’.

Actually, the Oracle Theatre can be traced back to 1908 in the Ogden papers when it shared ad space with the Isis and Globe theatres. Mr. Steck, who purchased the show house from R.C. Glasmann, opened it on May 10, 1917, with a name change to the Cozy Theatre. By May of 1923, Steck had sold his interests in the theatre to Harmon Peery of the Ogden Theatre Company.

It appears that the Peery ownership had a short life because news accounts from the Examiner on May 24, 1925 said: ‘Remodeling of the ground floor of the Cozy Theatre building on Washington Avenue into a modern store is to begin next week following the removal of the theatre equipment. According to an announcement made today by A. M. Miller, proprietor of the Washington market, who also owns the theatre property. The theatre will be made vacant Monday’.

In 1929, four years after the first Cozy Theatre had closed, Steck renamed his Rex Theatre on 25th street the Cozy Theatre.

The balcony may have never been removed as a store that occupied the building in 1955 had an ad that said ‘all sale material on balcony’, and an accountant’s location was said to be in the balcony office. The Little Professor Book Center opened in the building in 1974 but after 1977, the information is slim. A demolition date of the Cozy Theatre could not be found but today the Chamber of Commerce is the main tenant of the modern building that occupies the location.
