BigD at AMC

Opened on April 30, 1996, the IMAX Discovery Theatre located on the Broadway at the Beach is a marvel of architecture and wonder. This 400-seat cinema is the first theatre to be placed along the Grand Strand and the first in the state of South Carolina, making it one of Myrtle Beach’s biggest attractions.

The IMAX Discovery Theatre is among the world’s most immersive moviegoing experience specializing in showing features and documentaries within the IMAX experience. It is equipped for 3D presentations. It was closed in August 2017 and was taken over by AMC. In 2018 it was renamed BigD at AMC, becoming the 17th screen in the AMC Broadway 17. It was closed later in 2018.

This theatre is now branded as one of Carmike’s BigD theatres and operated as the 17th screen of the nearby Broadway Cinemas.

The news article from ‘Myrtle Beach Online’ questions why the sign on the door read, “Closed. Please visit us at AMC Broadway 16” when the theater is listed as the AMC Broadway 17. Before AMC took over last year, the Carmike Broadway 16 and IMAX theater (that previously occupied the BigD location) were not in business together. When AMC bought out Carmike, they also purchased the IMAX location (that I believe had already closed down briefly) and started calling itself ‘AMC Broadway 17’, including the BigD screen that is located a couple of businesses down. I watched Avatar here when the location was still IMAX. This location didn’t have the dome screen, the screen lighting was poor and the viewing area was restricted and awkward, with such a large screen and odd seating.

This theater has been closed for a couple of years now. When the Broadway 16 closed summer of 2019, this BigD location had been closed for probably a year before that.
