The Havelock Cinema 4 was opened by Stewart and Everett Theatres in 1985 as a replacement for the ancient Cherry Theatre 1 & 2. Carmike Cinemas took over the theater in 1986 with their acquisition of Stewart and Everett and expanded the Havelock Cinema 4 to six screens.
The theater is now known as the Carmike Cinema 6, with the closing of the Carmike Cinema 3 in Morehead City it is one of two remaining former S&E theaters in Eastern North Carolina under Carmike’s ownership (the Cinema 7 in Washington is the other). It was taken over by AMC in January 2017.

Are you sure it was originally a 4 screen? I passed by this theater last night. It is identical to the old cinema 6 we had here in Wilmington, nc that was built by S&E as a 6 screen in 1983. As you walk in, the auditoriums face 9 oclock and 3 oclock. Three on the left and three on the right. We had a 4 screen S&E built in 1984 that was set up different. As you walk in that place the auditoriums were facing 12 oclock. I suppose there were diffent designs but the fact that this theater is identical to our cinema 6 makes me sceptical that it wasnt always a 6.
smyjmy1: Yes, it opened in 1985 as a 4-screen cinema and operated as such under Stewart & Everett. Carmike added screens 5 and 6 early in 1987. S&E had an identical 4-screen theater in Aberdeen, also opened in 1985; Carmike chose to leave the Aberdeen Cinema 4 as a 4-screen until it closed. S&E did build a lookalike theater in Jacksonville called Cinema 6; I believe that theater was always a sixplex. S&E’s ads for the Havelock Cinema always used the number 4; Carmike probably tacked on the rear two auditoriums (one left, one right) and made it a six.
All of the theatres mentioned above we’re based on the design of the Town Cinema 6 in Charlotte, N.C. The auditoriums down each side and the concession stand in the middle of the lobby. The Havelock theatre did start out as a 4 plex and two auditoriums were added by Stewart & Everett in 1986 just before being purchased by Carmike Cinemas.
