Galaxy Cinemas

Located at the Cary Village Square Shopping Center at the intersection of Cary Towne Boulevard and Maynard Road. This theatre was originally the Imperial Cinemas I-IV that opened on December 23, 1977 under Litchfield-Fairlane Theatres. At the time of its opening, the Imperial was Cary’s first-ever multiplex theatre. Litchfield-Fairlane ran the Imperial IV until 1991 when United Artists Theatres took over the operations. It was under United Artists Theatres that the Imperial during the early-1990’s went through some renovations when it converted from four screens to six screens on December 16, 1994 and it was renamed the Imperial Cinemas VI. It remain that way until its demise in 2000 when United Artists Theatres closed it.

New York-based Madstone Theatres took over in 2002 and renamed it the Madstone VI(the format changed from showing first-run features to a combination of showing independent and foreign features as one of Cary’s multiplex arthouse theatres) until it closed in 2003.

Galaxy Theatres reopened this theatre on January 6, 2005 becoming the Galaxy Cinemas VI. It was the only multiplex cinema in the greater Triangle area that specializes in showing a combination of first-run features as well as showing independent, documentary, foreign and Bollywood films as well as specializing in showing vintage Hollywood classic movies.

The Galaxy Cinemas was closed on November 10, 2012.

The Galaxy Cinemas in Cary is independently owned, not part of a chain. It has been in the news recently as it was in danger of losing its lease; the owners of the property want to demolish the theater and replace it with a Harris-Teeter supermarket.

From ABC11 Eyewitness News (10PM broadcast on WLFL CW22): As of the close of business on November 10, 2012, the Galaxy Cinema will close permanently. It will be demolished and replaced with a Harris-Teeeter grocery store. The Galaxy’s owners may attempt reopening at a different location, but that option has not been finalized yet. For now, art films can be seen at the Triangle’s other arthouses(Carolina-Durham, Chelsea in Chapel Hill, Rialto and Colony in Raleigh); the fate of Bollywood films in the Triangle is uncertain.

This information was also confirmed from WRAL-TV(which also was the 10PM News Broadcast on WRAZ-FOX 50),and also NBC-17 News(WNCN-TV),and ABC11 Eyewitness News(WTVD-TV and also from the 10PM Broadcast on WLFL CW-22),and other media outlets in the greater Triangle….As of the close of business on Saturday November 10,2012,the Galaxy Cinema will close its doors permanently after more than eight years of service to the Triangle. Formerly, the Imperial Cinemas and the Madstone Cinemas, this theatre opened in 1977 and after more than 35 years it will be demolished and will be replaced by a Harris Teeter grocery store(which is moving from its former Cary Towne Center location). The Galaxy’s owners may attempt to reopen at a different location(rumor has it that it is planning to relocate to Park Place in Morrisville)but that decision at the present time has not been finalized as of yet. In the meantime, art films can be seen at the other Triangle area arthouses in the Raleigh-Durham area…..

Durham: The Carolina Theatre

Durham: Carmike Wynnsong Cinemas 15*

Chapel Hill: The Chelsea Theatres 1-2-3

Raleigh: The Raleigh Grande 16 (off Glenwood Ave.)

Raleigh: The Rialto Theatre

Raleigh: The Colony Theatres 1 & 2

As of the previous comment: No one knows for certain the fate of Bollywood movies will make a grand comeback to the Triangle area. It’s up in decisions for now.
