Graham Cinema new seats

The Graham Theatre was opened in 1928 with 250 seats and was the same in 1933. It suffered a fire in 1935 and was rebuilt as a larger 777-seat movie theatre. The Graham Cinema is a huge vintage movie house of the old school, complete with balcony–one of the last old-style theaters in North Carolina that hasn’t been chopped into smaller theaters.

Great art deco exterior facade…may have to check it out this winter.

Following on from ghamilton’s comment dated July 15, 2008, this cinema featured in the indie horror film “Dark Awakening”, directed by Dean C. Jones in 2014. As well as the exterior, there was a scene in the auditorium, which showed that large space off very well.

Graham Cinema is getting a major overhaul. This was in our county paper on September 18th 2016. Recently the projector was upgraded and now they got new seats and put some of the stained glass windows back into the front of the building.

Theater was around before 1941 for sure. Found a picture pre-remodel (1938), and the building at that point was your typical semi-fancy brick front thing from the ‘20s.

According to the NRHP listing, the theater was built in 1928. Listing also says the theater was gutted by a fire in 1935, but that doesn’t jibe with the 1938 photo I found. I suppose the auditorium could have been destroyed in the fire, and the front remodeled later?
