Legion Theatre

Haley’s Opera House was opened in 1910 and closed in 1915..The Gem Theatre was opened in 1916. By 1933 it had been renamed Melba Theatre. In April 1932 it became the Legion Theatre. It seated 403. Located in a popular place for Meramec River float trippers. The theatre maintained a small town atmosphere and most of its business was done on the week ends. It mostly ran a double bill program.

The Legion Theatre wasn’t anything spectacular as far as design but was one of the only forms of entertainment in the small town. The theatre closed in 1966. The theatre building itself is still standing and operating as cafe.

Address: 112 Main St.reet, Steelville, Mo 65565. This theatre goes back to the 1920’s when it was called the Gem Theatre, by 1933 it was known as the Melba Theatre and finally the Legion Theatre in 1937. Should have aka’s of Gem Theatre & Melba Theatre.

In 1910, Haley’s Opera House was where Steelville residents saw motion pictures. The Opera House was discontinued in 1915 and the Gem Theatre launched as a long-running movie theatre in 1916.
