Roseland Theatre, Pana, IL

This beautiful Art Moderne-style single-screen theater opened in April 1940, as Tanner’s Roseland Theatre on Locust Street. It had 900-seats and features a wonderful and colorful neon-lit marquee and rose-themed decor inside (Pana’s nickname is “City of Roses”). The theater, a highlight of the city, still screens first run movies on its large screen today.

In 1980, the Roseland was part of the Tanner Circuit, Herman Tanner president and GM. Mr. Tanner also ran the Tanner Drive-In in Pana at that time. There was another Tanner Drive-In in Vandalia, IL as well.

Found this home video clip of the Bill Horton projectionist at the Roseland since the 1950’s still striking the carbons and running a change over booth.

Sadly, Bill Horton, the most recent owner of the theater passed away March 4th, 2009 after a battle with lung cancer. Mr. Horton owned the theater along with his wife, Selma. As of this date, the Century projectors, carbon arc lamphouses and 2k changeover system in the above youtube video are still being used. I have been told that the theater will continue operating, but with new management.

Just curious: Does this theater now have digital projection?
