The Bay City Plaza Shopping Center opened theatre-less on September 21, 1966 anchored by an A&P grocery and a TG&Y Variety Store. Jerry Wilson of Wilson & Associates designed the Spanish-themed plaza and would also be the architect for the cinema. Tecar and Gulf States Theatres hoped to change that in 1970 announcing an automated twin-screen theatre with Spanish courtyard. It would be the first indoor theatre built in Baytown since 1949.

Tecar’s Bay Plaza Twin I & II Theatres finally opened February 9, 1972 with “Diamonds are Forever” and “Kidnapped.” Each auditorium held 406 patrons. In 1983, labor issues with non-union projectionists led to a picket and a smoke bomb incident. The theatre was sold.

Southern Theatres of Dallas purchased the theatre on June 18, 1983 and refurbished it. On September 9, 1983, the theatre was changed to a sub-run, discount operation - a format it retained until closure.
