The New Markan Theatre was a replacement for the Fox Theatre which had burned down in 1947. Designed by F.G. Fahnestock, Jr. the Markan was constructed by Kraft & Waltz Contracting. Its grand opening was April 2, 1948 with Charles Laughton in “The Big Clock.” Run by Mr. and Mrs. George L. Ickes, the theatre ran until May 22, 1962. The venue was retrofitted for other retail purposes.
