Red Wing Theatre

In the 2200 block of East Monument Street you come upon the Red Wing Theatre. Opened in 1914 it was one of the larger neighborhood movie theatres seating 900. The Red Wing Theatre was the big theatre of the neighborhood until the State Theatre was built two blocks west of the Red Wing Theatre. Even though it was outdone by the bigger and more elaborate State Theatre it has established itself as a neighborhood favorite and drew large crowds.

The Red Wing Theatre closed in 1960. The theatre was gutted and remodeled into shops and is still there today.

Number seven on this list is a children’s clothing store that occupies at least part of the former theater:

Rite Aid is still listed, but that information could be outdated. The building may also be carved into separate businesses that use the same address.

No, it doesn’t matter. I pointed out the clothing store to show that function should be retail.

My mother told me she saw James Cagney in Yankee Doodle Dandy at the Red Wing in 1942.

She went alone and walked to the theater by herself. She was 9 years old.
