Murray Theater, 1940

The Murray Theatre was located on E. 27th Street and Walrand Avenue. It opened by 1915 seating 302. A small neighborhood theatre with a white stucco exterior. The front of the building arched up over the lobby but went flat over the auditorium. This gave the lobby a much higher ceiling than the auditorium.

The front has been blocked in and painted a grey color and is used for storage since the theatre closed May 14, 1951.

Closed for good on Monday, May 14, 1951, with John Drew Barrymore in HIGH LONESOME, John Dall and Peggy Cummins in the film noir classic GUN CRAZY, and the Bowery Boys in 1950’s BLUES BUSTERS (not to be confused with a similar-sounding 1944 film of theirs, BLOCK BUSTERS). [Kansas City Star]

A Murray Theatre was operating in this neighborhood at least as early as 1915, when it was listed in The American Motion Picture Direcotry, though at 3202 E. 27th. Newspaper ads from 1915 give the location as 27th and Walrond Avenue. The Murray was at 3206 27th by the time the 1919 city directory was printed.
