Located right on the Gulf Coast in Edgewater Village, the theatre was opened as the Cinema Tavern 1 & 2 on August 24, 1984. In 1989 it was renamed Silver Screen, It was partially destroyed by a fire around 1990. It was rebuilt as the Silver Screen, but was renamed Hollywood Theatre around 1997. It opened as a first run house but with the stiff competition it later reverted to sub-run discount, becoming the Silver Screen again. “Rocky Horror Picture Show” played on Saturday nights at midnight.

Sadly the building was one of the casualties of Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005. The remains stood for a short while until they were eventually demolished.

Thank you for reviewing the Silver Screen. We are the third owners of this wonderful movie theater. The theater opened in 1983 under the name of the Cinema Tavern it was a beer house theater that showed second run movies for a dollar. In 1989 the owner changed the name to the Silver Screen. Around 1990-91 the Silver Screen caught fire and mostly burned down. In 1991 it was rebuilt and continued operating as the Silver Screen. At or around 1997 the original owner changed the name to the Hollywood Theater. In 2000 he sold the Hollywood Theater to the second owner. A year later we were offered the ownership of the theater to the third owners us and we changed the name back to The Silver Screen Theater. My wife has been the manager ,off and on, of the theater sence 1986. We are still a triplex second run theater offering $2.00 matinee and $3.00 shows. The Rocky Horror Picture Show shows once a month and is presented by the fan club at http://www.rockyunbound.com/

The Silver Screen is gone for good. Edgewater Village shopping plaza now has a buffet restaurant in the Silver Screen’s former location.

I must have went to Rocky Horror at this theater every weekend in my Senior year of High School in ‘88. One of my friends dressed as Riff Raff. It was Cinema Tavern then.
