The Cameo Theatre opened May 15, 1926 with “Stage Struck.” Schine took on the Cameo on May 1, 1936. It positioned it as a sub-run third tier theatre in 1940. Listing end May 29, 1952 after a double feature of “Love is Better Than Ever” and “Wild Blue Yonder.” The Cameo was used a furniture warehouse thereafter until May of 1972 when its days were numbered.

I remember reading somewhere, perhaps in the Theatre Historial Society’s publication “Marquee” many years ago, of how a security guard accidentally turned on the vertical sign and someone was able to snap a picture of it. This was around 1965 and supposedly the vertical hadn’t been lit up since 1949 when the theatre closed. I’m sad, but not surprised, to read here that it has been torn down.

Thanks for listing this theatre Howard. My grandmother used to tell me about going to the movies here, and I remember the closed down theatre building sitting on Clinton Ave. up until is destruction.
