Theatre Corona

The center of a neighborhood in full transformation. The start of an extraordinary adventure that began in the 1890’s, to reborn a theater which has made the beautiful days of an old but vibrant Montreal. The source of the neighborhood, for the south-west resident of Montreal, in love with their environment, their history and their heritage. The heart of many artists which create with their fantasy and inspiration, concert to promote the music, from here and the rest of the world. And if it’s true that the light is the absence of darkness, then we hope that there we’ll be many to lights in this magnificent venue.

Opened in 1912 as the Family Theatre, the architects were Difort and Decarie. Interior renovations were carried out in 1923 by architect Daniel J. Crighton, with decorations by interior designer Emmanuel Biffra. It was re-named the United Theater. A new marquee was added in 1938, again designed by Crighton.

In the mid 1980’s the United Theater had been closed for several years and was boarded up, looking in a very sorry state.

It was possibly re-named Corona Theatre in 1938. Closure came as a movie theatre in 1958 and it was then in use as a warehouse until 1998. The facade was restored in 1999.

The website mentions (in french) something regarding interior renovation in 2003 or 2004. I am not sure if that meant the renovation was done then or if they merely got approval or funding. The photos make it look very good (nice color scheme) – can’t tell if it is renovated in the photos but believe it is not. It still looks very attractive though!

Here is the link to the English version of their website: http://www.theatrecorona.com/siteANGLO.html The 2003-2004 renovations were the “2nd phase” and have been completed. No mention of more recent renovation, but they describe it as ongoing work. Lots of nice historical photos of the ornate auditorium!
