Previous Names: Palace Theater
The building had been the Palace Theater in the 1920’s, but was closed for several years. On November 1, 1941 it was reopened as the Cameo Theater, with Jack Le Rue in “Hard Guy” & Lupe Velez in “Mexican Spitfire”.
I have no idea how long the building was the Cameo Theater and how long it was the Palace Theater.
I know that at one point, the Cameo Theater was managed by Harry ‘Red Carnation’ Switzer, who had also managed the Colonial Theater and Rialto Theater.
There was a fire in the building that housed the Cameo Theater on May 16, 1957, but news reports say there was no damage to the Cameo Theater (which was showing “Night Runner” and “Five Guns West” at the time) or the men’s department store next door. Damage, it seems, was confined to the upper units of the building.
