Built by the local Council as part of a leisure centre, the Kavanagh Cinema was operated by Mike Vickers of the small independent chain Reeltime Cinemas. This cinema was named after his late partner Barry Kavanagh and it opened on 7th April 1995. The two auditoriums originally had 140 and 100 seats, now reduced to 137 and 95. Reeltime Cinemas went into receivership in the Spring of 2009.
The Kavanagh Cinema was taken over by the independent RSJ Cinemas.

I am sad to have to inform you all that Reeltime Cinemas Ltd who operate the Kavanagh have gone into administration so the cinema’s future could be on the line along with the Carlton over at Westgate if a buyer cannot be found.
The Kavanagh now seems to have changed hands. On checking the venue’s website, the company running it calls itself RSJ Cinemas.
The last day of 35mm projection at this cinema was Sunday 3rd November 2013, it has been digital since then. A video from that day can be seen at https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=E9jWpvYq8vY .
