The La Grange Theatre was opened in 1914. It was designed by local architect R.C. Fletcher. It was renamed Park Theatre in 1937 following a remodel. It was closed in 1950 and was demolished in 1972.

Opened in 1914 as the La Grange Theatre, it was re-named Park Theatre in 1937 when it was given an Art Deco re-model by the then owners;Balaban & Katz. It closed in 1950 and was demolished in 1972.
There is a LaGrange Theatre in operation that was one of the B&K theatres. It operates as a subrun house. www.lagrangetheatre.com for showtimes and a marquee pic. The history of the current LaGrange seems to indicate that it has always been called that.
It’s interesting, but I remember as a child in the 60’s parked in front of the “Park Theatre” waiting to pick up my dad off the train. I still remember the name and the building because there was nothing else to do but stare out the window while waiting for Dad. At that time the theater is all closed and boarded up and seemed to be pretty small….then at some point (maybe 1972)it was gone seemingly overnight…
I have some slides taken at the time of demolition which I haven’t looked at since 1972. I remember that there was snow on the boiler in one of the shots. I don’t think there was a basement. I don’t see how this theatre could have been called the LaGrange with another LaGrange Theatre just 3 blocks south.
This is not a picture of the Park but of the La Grange theater before the top was taken off of it due to structural issues. The original theater was the less fancy of the two. The sign says La Grange because there was only one La Grange theater. These photos should be moved to the La Grange theater photo page. Jeff Larsen
Plans for this theater were announced in the January 25, 1913, issue of Construction News. The theater was to be 30x125 feet and would cost $8,000. The project was designed by local architect R. C. Fletcher.
