South Shields Mall was a minor shopping center that opened in 1972. It contained the South Shields 2 / The Movies in 1979. But the “Mall” concept failed and BSW Architects of Tulsa took on what would be a $1 million renovation that took the retail location from South Sheilds Mall to totally outdoor Shields Plaza. BSW’s designs uprooted the twin screen theatre and gave a spot to a low-cost $400,000 8-plex replacement that would launch as the Super Saver South Shields 8.

The discount sub-run house was operated by Super Saver Cinemas along with the Lakeshore Mall. Super Saver proclaimed them as “Oklahoma’s Most Luxurious Theaters.” Divergent opinions were easy to find but they were certainly the most luxurious theaters located in the Shields Plaza and Lakeshore Mall. In 1999, MI Theatres, which operated the Northpark 7, added the Lakeshore Mall and Shields Plaza. They upped the discount moniker pledging not only $1.50 admission with $1 Tuesdays but also $1 concessions across the board. But by that time, the megaplexes including the AMC Quail Springs 24 and the Cinemark Tinseltown USA were destroying the aging multiplexes.

MI dropped the Lakeshore first on January 6, 2000. The Shields Plaza was unceremoniously shuttered on May 2, 2000.

This opened as Super Saver Cinemas on February 6th, 1987. Grand opening ads posted. The ad claims it had 1940’s luxurious decor. Admission: $1

This was NOT the same theatre as the old South Shields Mall twin. Different location in mall, and different company.

And note to Stagehandguy, the link you reference is to WAS a fellow (Rivist) who is well known for copying the work of many other researchers.

The South shields twin opened in Nov of 1979. It was located at 7536 S. Shields, and was originally operated by Grube and company. It closed in Apr of 1986, and was a consistent low performer.

The South Shields 8, AKA Supersavers 8 opened in Feb of 1987 and was located at 7301 S. Shields.

Roadshttp://www.roadsideoklahoma.com/node/500 Oklahoma has a couple of modern photos of the Shilds Plaza 8. Looks as if there has been wind damaga to one corner of the cinema structure.

The rough research I’m doing now suggests that this is same theater as South Shields 2 aka “The movies” same address from 1978-86 then 87-2000 became Shields Plaza 8 but is also on here as south shields mall twin

I’m guessing this is what the current view SHOULD look like

Are you talking about the part of the shopping center with the stair-stepped (viewed from above) front facade? According to Google Earth, it disappeared sometime in 2004 or 2005. Historical views show it there, disappeared between 2004 and 2005, then became a parking lot.

But, in the current view, the building is back again, identical to the one in 2003 and before. Very odd…. Looks like the current view and April 2002 views are 100% identical.

Looks like Langston Company is at that address now. A large western clothing store.

This was where my best friend and I used to hang out just to enjoy being young, full of energy, and spending time with all our other friends. It was always my favorite place to see a movie too.
