Linkrot repair: JKR Partners have renamed themselves JKRP Architects, and have reconfigured their web site. Four photos of the Cityplex remain on display at this link.

Looks like there have been a rash of breakins at this place…

The Newark CityPlex 12 was designed by the Philadelphia architectural firm JKR Partners, which was formerly known as JKRoller Architects. There are six photos of this rather stark, modern cinema on the firm’s web site.

Currently the theater is being expanded this weekend as CityPlex 12. The theater will have a soft opening this weekend followed by a grand opening for the 4th of July holiday. The largest screen in the revamped theater will be called the Shaq-EX Premium Theatre Experience with a 43-foot large screen and 3D projection, stadium seating and digital surround sound. All auditoriums will have 7.1 Dolby surround sound, digital 3D and 2D projection, and stadium seating. More info can be found at the theatre’s facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/CityPlexNewark

according to Mayor Corey Booker, this theater will expand to 14 screens next year under the supervision of Newark-born and Boston Celtics player Shaquille O'Neal. The theater will have state of the art amenities. Groundbreaking is set for June, and will open for the holiday 2011 season. It’s about time that a megaplex returns to Newark.

Opened in 1993 near the epicenter of the infamous 1967 riots. This theater could be closing soon.
