Sue Townsend Theatre (Official)
Architects: Richard Murphy
Functions: Live Performances
Previous Names: Phoenix Arts, Upper Brown Street Theatre
The Phoenix Arts was a small arts centre with a cinema showing a range of worldwide films, including the very obscure during its annual Far Out Festival. It opened in 1964 and has a modern simple design, with glass frontage and neon sign… but still a treasure. In 2010 the Phoenix Arts re-located to another building on the other side of the city and this became the Upper Brown Street Theatre. It has since been re-named Sue Townsend Theatre after the late playwright and author.
