Regent Theater

This theater was on Kearny Avenue, across from the current town hall. Any information on this theater would be greatly appreciated. All I’ve been told is that it burned down many years ago.

There was a fire in the theater on 8/31/52:

N.J. Movie Roof Falls, 300 Escape

KEARNY, N. J. Aug. 30â€" A two-alarm fire collapsed the roof of the Regent theater tonight some 10 minutes after a crowd of more than 300 movie-goers had been calmly and quickly evacuated. Police said alertness of an unidentified usher in spotting the smoke and advising the projectionist to stop the movie prevented a possible panic. Fire Chief William Wanders said the flames may have been started by a short circuit in a fan at the rear of the stage.

Listed in the 1944 Film Daily yearbook with 1781 seats, in the 1951 edition with 1495 and in the 1956 edition without a seat total, perhaps indicating closure after the aforementioned fire.

Lost Memory, I also find that a Wurlitzer theatre organ opus 600 style “D” was installed in the Regent Theatre, in November 1922. That organ was moved to the Capitol Theatre in Elizabeth NJ in July 1925. It appears that opus 1117 (10 ranks) was purchased as an upgrade since opus 600 only had 6 ranks (in one chamber).
