News About This Theater

The El Cortez

The El Cortez Theater was built in 1933 and had a seating capacity of 580. Within the first 10 years of operation, a gas explosion blew the front off the theatre. It was repaired and reopened.

It was closed for many, many years, but revitalized and re-opened in 1995 to show first-run movies once again.

This little town of Truth or Consequences, NM (pop. 7,500+), formerly Hot Springs, NM, and the little surrounding towns, have helped support it through the years with their generous attendence.

The town was named after the TV show following some kind of contest years ago. I don’t recall what the original name of the town was.

The town was originally named Hot Springs. Film Daily Yearbooks from 1941 though 1950 list the El Cortz Theatre with 500 seats (1941/1943 editions) to 580 seats (1950 edition).

Motion Picture Herald, Sept. 6, 1947: “Tomas Martinez is rebuilding front of El Cortez, after it was wrecked by runaway truck.”

MichaelKilgore - that seems to be from a different El Cortez located in Colorado. However, I had heard this El Cortez had a gas explosion in the early 40s that blew the front of the building off and was rebuilt.
