This theater had two screens back in the 70s and was called the St. Johns “Rocking Chair” Theater because it had seats that would indeed rock a bit. Later they chopped the theaters up for more screens. The theater site itself had a very suburban feeling, with a big parking lot in front. It was demolished at some point and the site is now a strip mall.

When I worked for Eastern Federal (EFC) in Jacksonville during the early 1980’s, the St. John’s 4, Plaza, and Neptune theatres were all operated by Kent Theatres, a regional operator, with theatres throughout Florida. At that time, Kent Theatres HQ was at the Plaza Theatre in the Southside section of Jacksonville.

Since that article was published, the Jax 10 has also closed, as did the Pablo 9 in nearby Jacksonville Beach. As far as I know, aside from a drive-in and one single-screen walk-in, Jacksonville’s movie scene today is controlled entirely by national chains (AMC, Regal, Cinemark and Wallace). Not an unusual story, sad to say.
