The Chinese opening advertisement of the China Theatre and re-opening advertisement of the Rialto Theatre

The air-conditioned China Theatre was the first theatre to be built in the Wanchai district after the end of WWII. The theatre opened to business on 28th August 1948, and showed selected Chinese dialect and English language films until its closure on 3rd June 1952.

After entensive renovations, the theatre was renamed the Rialto Theatre and opened on 15th November 1952 with a Mandarin-language film.

Its long and narrow auditorium was on the ground floor of the theatre building.
It showed first run Chinese dialect and English language films until its closure on 13th September 1977. The Rialto Theatre was run by Shaw and Sons Limited.

A residential building was built on the site of the theatre.
