Whitney Theater

A wonderful old neighborhood theater in the north New Haven district of Whitneyville. The Whitney Theatre opened in 1940, and was closed around 1984. It was designed by local Hamden architect Jacob Weinstein, in collaboration with Benjamin Schlanger. There were 978 seats in orchestra and balcony levels.

It has now been much altered and developed into condos and retail.

The Whitney had a snall-town charm with it’s small concessions ares always featuring free hot coffee. I filled in summers wheen the managers went on vacations or if someone was out sick. In my opinion, this wonderul piece of art in itself comes in second to the Cinemart, and followed by the Strand on Dixwell Avenue. Now they are sll gone.

The Whitney snagged the regional premiere of “JAWS' in 1976 – the film played to sell out crowds forever!
